Mini & Junior Rugby
Welcome to the Blandford Bulldogs, the aim of the Bulldogs group is to facilitate 3 to 6 year old’s interest in rugby who are too young to join one of our organised age groups but still want to be part of a rugby club.
Our fun sessions are based on Agility, Balance and Coordination, (A,B,C) within a rugby atmosphere. These sessions are held on Sundays during the rugby season, though due to the age of this group the sessions do not run for the whole training period or if weather conditions preclude holding a session.
Children from this group will move on to Under 7’s providing they have had their 6th birthday by midnight on 31st August for the forthcoming season. All Parents/Guardians are required to stay on site but are free to enjoy the facilities in the clubhouse or watch other age groups training or playing matches.
Sessions are taken outside so please make sure your little one is dressed for all weathers.
Our U7’s are lively characters who are always full of beans! The team are a talented group of youngsters who are enthusiastic and passionate about the game. They are relishing the prospect of regular competition when they commence the new season. We aim to teach this age group an understanding of space and how to use it together with improving their hand-eye coordination in ball passing. Combined with the emphasis on teamwork and enjoyment of the game.
Blandford U8’s continue to grow and after progressing in the under 7's they start the Under 8's as a confident team. They looking forward to playing matches at home and away whilst concentrating on continuing to learning key rugby skills, with the focus on teamwork.
The U9’s are a great group and many have been in the squad for a number of seasons and now face the next big challenge. This season in addition to continuing to develop their basic rugby skills we now start contact rugby. As always with the introduction of a new skill our coaches will gradually guide the players in the safe method of undertaking a tackle on another player.
This season the U10’s will be combining with our Under 11 players due to low numbers, however we are confident that once the season gets going and recruitment is in full swing the numbers will grow to enable us to play the two groups as separate teams. The players in this group have been playing age grade rugby for a few years now and are starting to develop and hone their hand eye coordination and spatial awareness, together with their contact skills. Players will also start to learn the art of decision making - pass or not to pass, which option produces the best result for the squad. They are a friendly bunch who love nothing better than to get muddy at rugby.
All the coaches for our current age groups aim to ensure that sessions and matches are centred on players having an enjoyable experience. As a club we adhere to the RFU ethos of TREDS, which stands for Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. Full details of this and our other policy documentation can be found on our website.
All of our coaches have attended the recommended RFU Coaching courses and continue to work towards improving the coaching skills by attending various other skill enhancing courses. If you think that you would like to help out on the coaching front, please either speak to your child’s coach or a member of the committee who will be happy to provide you with more information.
