Blandford RFC Club Handbook 2018
A downloadable version of the Club Handbook containing additional information is available here for you to download and print.
It gives me great pleasure to continue in the role of Blandford RFC President for the 2018/19 season, which is already looking to a busy and exciting one. Over the years that I have been involved with the club both on the managerial front and as a player representing the club I have met a number of players and club members not only from Blandford, but also from a wide and diverse number of clubs and the one element which shines through is the love of the game of rugby at all levels.
I would like to extend not only my appreciation but that of all club members to all of those organisations who have kindly agreed to be our sponsors for this season. I would like to express special appreciation to Stuart Davis and Bristol Maid who have agreed to continue as our Principal Club Sponsor for the upcoming season.
This season will provide the club with yet more exciting challenges for all sections of the club. Our senior teams commence the 2018/19 season with enthusiasm following the trials and tribulations of their respective league games last year, I am sure that with your support from the sidelines they will continue to provide exciting an entertaining rugby for all of us to watch. Our Mini and Youth Section already have lined up a series of fixtures with other clubs in the area, both at home and away. I would ask all club members to actively support them as they are the future of our club.
As a club there have over the years been many members who through their efforts have seen the club grow and thrive form our original small beginnings in the Half Moon Public House. With out their efforts we would not be the club we are today. There are far too many individuals for me to thank them all in person but to those who have or are continuing to support the club I would like to thank you on behalf of the club for their efforts, many of which go unseen by club members.
During the closed season we have continued with the grounds maintenance and pitch improvements recommended by Keith Kent through the 2017/18 RFU NatWest Rugby Force initiative. It has been a long and somewhat protracted process to achieve this but I am sure that you will agree that it has been worth the efforts of the club, especially if you have been a club member for long enough to remember what it was like when we first played at Larksmead back in the early 1980s. Good pitches are vital to attract and keep players and to prevent injures.
I look forward to meeting you all over the season either pitch side or at one of our social events.
I am deeply honoured to be elected by the members of the club as the first female Club Chairperson and look forward to helping to guide the club forward ensuring that we meet all of the rules and regulations of the RFU, but also continue to be a club which is family and fun orientated.. Previous Chairmen have through their effort steered the club to where we are today , as a vibrant club with a reputation of playing exciting rugby who maintain the traditions of the game and uphold the RFU Code of Rugby ethos which incorporates teamwork, respect, sportsmanship and enjoyment. I ask that you all support me and my committee, who work long and tirelessly behind the scenes, in allowing the club to achieve this high standard for this season.
Following an extremely hard fought season for both our senior teams, the 1st XV will play the league matches in the Dorset and Wilts 1 (South) league and our 2nd XV team will be playing their game in Dorset and Wilts 3 (South). The future of our club lies with the Mini & Youth section and I would ask that you continue to support these youngsters. They already have a number of fixtures organised for the various age groups.
With support form all club members to ensure the club continues to move forward I encourage you to play, watch, get friends to come along and join up as a club member and support not only the players but attend the social events that are organised throughout the year. As a club we will be continuing to involved in the local community maintaining our links with other local organisations and continuing our charitable support.
As the season progresses we will again be utilising our website together with our Facebook and Twitter pages to provide information about fixtures and other events. To enable us to contact you please ensure that a valid e-mail address is provided when completing the Membership Renewal forms. This will allow us to contact you via the RFU Game Management System. We will again be providing the club calendar to those who wish to subscribe. Details of how to connect are set out on your website. The Webmaster will also be maintaining the RSS BRFC Feed to those who wish to subscribe.
This season we will again be following the RFU Core Values and I ask you to take your time and read through these. They are available via our website under the Policy Documents tab.
I look forward to seeing you all either at the pitches or when attending one of our social events.
Within the section we will again be continuing RFUs ‘Age Grade Rugby‘. When the RFU were developing this system they questioned young players who overwhelming put enjoyment of the game above winning for the main reason to play rugby. This ‘player- centric‘ approach puts the wants and needs of young people at its heart. It is very much about developing young players and it recognises that player enjoyment will keep more young people enjoying and playing the game for longer and keep them playing into their adult years.
Our coaches aim to make rugby enjoyable and Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, and Sportsmanship, ‘the RFU Core Values‘ are key to this. We believe that the self-belief and confidence that develops as the players skills improve creates a deep and lasting enjoyment of the game. We will expect our players to abide by the Core Values and we would ask that parents take time to encourage their young players to follow these values.
Age Grade Rugby focuses on developing a Rugby players‘ skills and it has been designed to provide progressive building blocks to develop players through the age groups to the full 15-a-side game. This reinforces the aim of the mini and youth section to develop young players with the character and skills to become the core of the Blandford Rugby Club 1st XV in years to come.
I am sure you will support our aim!
