Shroton
137-9 lost to Blandford RFC 141-1 by 9 wickets.
Blandfords rugby players
displayed their all round sporting talents by winning the Ranston Knockout Cup
with an emphatic 9 wicket victory over controversial finalists Shroton. In front
of a capacity crowd at the magnificent Shroton Bowl, Blandford skipper Kev
Robbins won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Shroton to bat first on a
damp wicket. His faith was immediately rewarded in the first over, a direct hit
by George Hall running out Edwards to reduce Shroton to 1 for 1. The hosts
continued to struggle against the bowling of Phill Meaden (2-22) and Mike Angel
(3-38). With Meadon removing the dangerous Darren Ball, brother Matt (2-42) then
bowled Stuart Jeans for 18 and Angel snared batting star Matt Pike for 24, it
was left to Simon Giles to hit a powerful 47 not out to raise Shroton up to a
respectable 138-9. Blandford started their reply steadily, before Angel began to
find his range, reaching a rapid 50 off of 31 balls. With the noisy crowd firmly
in favor of the under dog rugby players, Angel and Hall batted sensibly to put
on 100 for the first wicket before Hall fell for a fluent 37. This brought
Meaden to the wicket, who proceeded to wrap the game up with some trademark
brutal shot play, blasting 27 not out off only 11 balls, finishing the game with
a typically huge 6, man of the match Angel was left unbeaten on 63. “It was
great to finish my time in charge with a trophy” commented retiring skipper
Kev Robbins. “We deserved this win, as we were the better team on the night,
everyone did their bit, whether with bat, ball or in the field, and the
atmosphere was brilliant.” In true rugby tradition, Blandfords players
celebrated long and hard in to the night, dancing elegantly to the sounds of
Clive “Elvis” Smith and drinking their vanquished rivals under the table to
record a second victory in a day!
