MATCH REPORTS
Blandford 1st XV 22 Wimborne 2nd XV 8
Blandford celebrated the New Year in style, finally breaking their losing streak with an emphatic win over local rivals Wimborne. “Hopefully we can put the first half of the season behind us and go forward from this result.” Commented captain Lee Haim. “I’m really pleased with the effort everyone put in, and it’s a deserved reward for all the guys who have stuck at it despite the results so far this season.” From the kick off, the hosts were intent on putting the visitors under pressure, forcing several early errors, before they eventually conceded a penalty that allowed Kev Robbins to kick his team in to a lead they were not to relinquish. Blandford quickly increased their lead with No. 8 Joe Brake muscling over following a well worked catch and drive from a line out, Robbins added the touchline conversion with style. Blandford continued to control the game in the forwards, and with their front row of Matt Cowlard, Robbins and Matt Pearce in dominate form, Wimborne were being starved of ball and territory. When the visitors finally did gain possession, an interception by Haim on half way released Dave Judd to sprint home for his side’s second try, Robbins again converting. Blandford used their strength in the set piece to good effect to claim their third score, driving Wimborne over from a five metre scrum for Brake to claim his second score. However, Wimborne rallied well, and after forcing Blandford in to a sustained spell of defence, punished Blandford for killing the ball with a penalty just before half time. The second half saw a revitalised Wimborne come back hard, Blandford having to vigorously defend a number of strong attacks before finally conceded a try midway through the half. With Mark Evans sin binned, the visitors worked the numerical advantage to break Blandfords line. With both sides still keen to attack, but remaining robust in defence, the last quarter provided plenty of drama but with out any addition to the score line, the final whistle signalling a long awaited victory for Blandford. “The previous few games we have shown signs of what we are capable of.” Noted winning coach Alan Walker “Today we finally put all the areas of our game together, and got the result we needed. The aim now is to build on this and look to get a run of results going. There is a long way to go this season and enough points are available to pull ourselves off the bottom of the table.”
